Today I participated in the tapestry weaving workshop with Naomi, and I learnt how to use and make my own loom using everyday objects like tables and clothes rails. I found this workshop very beneficial because it allowed me to explore texture in a more physical way, and finalise my colour palette. I bought in fabrics with varied textures like velvet, ribbon and shopping bags, and experimented with the placement and weight of the colours, and how different textures worked next to each other. Relating to my theme of human connection I want to create a very sensory, tactile outcome, and I feel that the weave sample I made was successful in this way, due to the different fabrics and how I arranged them. I really enjoyed not only the result but the overall process of making my own woven fabric, which has lead me to consider how I could incorporate this into the performance aspect of my outcome. Building on this success next week I would like to be more ambitious and start working on a bigger scale, using the clothing rail to start weaving the structure I have been developing through my prints. When discussing how I could push my weaving further with Naomi, she suggested that I could weave wire throughout to create form and structure, and I think this would be a great way to create a wearable, large scale garment. I would also like to experiment with different weaving techniques, as when looking at Tara's work I really admired the way she'd used tassels and knots to create a more 3D, sculptural tapestry.
